What is the world’s oldest religion? What is the true religion for Black people? What was Africa’s original religion?

If I earned one pound for each time I was asked these questions, I would be a wealthy man by now.

As a Black Studies lecturer of many years experience, no course module generates more controversy and debate among the adult students than religion. Everyone has something to say or contribute.

I have never presented any definitive answers to the big questions of the nature of the divine force or forces, human existence, ethics, destiny, etcetera. I have always left this up to the students to make up their own minds. What I have done, and continue to do even in this lecture-essay, is to provide adult students with the intellectual data with which to think. In doing this, I only present data that can be verified.

In teaching this module I used to recommend perhaps a dozen books for the adult students to read. Sometimes it was a page here and there. Sometimes it was a chapter. With some books, I recommended reading them from cover-to-cover. However, I never came across any self-contained book on religion that said everything I wanted it say. Consequently, I wrote this lecture-essay directly based on one of my classes so that it would say everything that I wanted it to say.

This lecture-essay traces the origin and evolution of religious ideas in early Africa. The paper also highlights parallels between the religious ideas in early Africa and the ideas believed in and practiced by traditional African societies uninfluenced by Islam or Christianity.

As with my other writings, I highlight unapologetically what Africa and Africans contributed to human culture. To this aim, I challenge both the racism and the religious bigotry that has conspired to bury the contributions of Africans to religion. Just for the record, some of the religious bigotry is even perpetuated by Black believers themselves.

I owe major intellectual debts to scholars who have gone before me in this endeavour. Chief amongst these were Dr Femi Biko, Professor Yosef ben-Jochannan, Professor John Jackson, Professor George James, Professor Charles Finch and the Reverend Mbiti.

This lecture-essay presents what is currently known about the early religious history of the human race. Yes I address questions such as: What is the world’s oldest religion? However, I prefer to reframe the question as: What is the world’s oldest religion that we can document? If this question interests you, read on.

There are other difficult questions such as: What is the true religion for Black people? What was Africa’s original religion?

I believe that the question on the true religion for Black people cannot be answered definitively. Each person must make their own decisions. That decision, however, should be informed by verifiable knowledge. I present some of that knowledge here.

On the question of Africa’s original religion, this can be answered definitively. African regions had regionally defined religions. No single tradition covered the length and breadth of the African continent. However, these religious traditions shared many common features with each other. If these features interest you, read on.

Rising food prices, climate change, and the ravages of global capitalism have made the poor increasingly vulnerable to economic crises. At the same time, the governments of many developing countries have adopted austerity measures that leave their citizens without a safety net in times of need. This combination poses a potent threat to social and political stability throughout the developing world. How do the poor cope with economic crises when their governments fail to guarantee social welfare? How do societies keep from fracturing under the weight of economic grievances and civil unrest?

Outsourcing Welfare argues that the answers to these questions lie with remittances, the hundreds of billions of dollars that international migrants send to their home countries. Remittances are a leading source of income in dozens of developing economies and a critical lifeline that millions of families use to pay for food, healthcare, clothing, and other basics. In the absence of adequate government social protections, remittances insulate poor families from the full pain of economic crises, and in doing so, reduce the severity of grievances that fuel populist anger, civil unrest, and political instability.

Through stories from his fieldwork in Mexico and Central America and analyses of data from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, Roy Germano shows how remittances buffer economic shocks, contribute to economic optimism, and dampen the threat of popular discontent during economic crises. Germano argues that remittances perform a social, economic, and political function that is strikingly similar to social spending, and that counting on people to migrate and send money home has become a de facto social welfare policy in many developing countries.

Economists direct their research mainly to the technical frontiers of the discipline. But the actual decisions of political economy are made, not by experts, but by ordinary public officials and voters--the "Everyman." However, the task of educating the Everyman is neglected, sometimes even denigrated, by academic economists. Daniel Klein has here gathered essays of 9 great economists of this century--Friedrich Hayek, Ronald Coase, Thomas Schelling, Gordon Tullock, Israel Kirzner, Frank Graham, William Hutt, Clarence Philbrook, and D. McCloskey--addressing the existential issue for economists: "How do we contribute to human betterment? " The authors express their esteem for economic research firmly rooted in public issues and that contributes to public discourse. Some suggest that the academic focus on technical refinement not only diverts economists from efforts at public edification, but might even mislead economists in their own understanding of economic affairs.

In the course of Theodore Lewis' career in the US Foreign Service-spanning twenty-nine years and including tours of duty in Vietnam, Pakistan, the DRCongo, and Korea-he came upon many significant links with theology. This book tells the story of his discovery of these links and their importance. It is also a story of God bringing good out of human tragedy. Lewis ends by drawing together the implications of these links for natural theology, which deals with how theology ought to relate to the world-and thus is of prime importance for both theology and the world. The salient implication of these links is that the Holy Spirit operating as at Pentecost can bring together the secular with the theological, the academic with the human. And by validating this possibility, the book breaks decisive new ground. In particular, it makes clear the vital contribution that Foreign Service and other craft disciplines can and should make to the restoration of the church and to the advent of a new Pentecost.

Ethics appears early in the life of a culture. It is not the creation of philosophers. Many philosophers today think that their job is to take the ethics of their society in hand, analyse it into parts, purge the bad ideas, and organize the good into a systematic moral theory. The philosophers' ethics that results is likely to be very different from the culture's raw ethics and, they think, being better, should replace it. But few of us, even among philosophers, settle real-life moral questions by consulting the Categorical Imperative or the Principle of Utility, largely because, if we do, we often do not trust the outcome or cannot even reliably enough decide what it is. By contrast, James Griffin explores the question what philosophers can reasonably expect to contribute to normative ethics or to the ethics of a culture. Griffin argues that moral philosophers must tailor their work to what ordinary humans' motivational capabilities, and he offers a new account of moral deliberation.
