A new version of the complete spiritual discourses of the Sufi Master, Jalal al-Din Rumi, a great spiritual teacher to be sure, a great poet certainly, a guide to all on the spiritual path and a friend to those unsure of the way.Jalal al-Din Rumi followed the path of Islamic mysticism, a great spiritual teacher to be sure, a great poet certainly, a guide to all on the spiritual path and a friend to those unsure of the way. To those who are sure of the path Rumi says with complete confidence, 'You should realize therefore that whoever has committed himself wholly to God will be safe from all harm, and will remain safe. In His presence, no petition of any man is ever in vain.' And then he adds, 'His bounty and mercy are infinite. Whoever relies on Him will never go astray, his trust will not be in vain.' To those unsure of the path Rumi encourages, 'since God's generosity is so well known, and all the world is aware of His grace and kindness, why do you not ask and hope to receive from Him a robe of honor and a rich gift? Instead, you sit in despair and say, 'If He wills, He will give something to me.' And so you pray to Him not at all.'

LAYLA & MAJNUN: THE SCREENPLAY by Paul Smith

LAYLA AND MAJNUN is one of the most famous and influential love stories of all time. It is a true story that inspired Shakespeare to write ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Of the many poetic versions of this immortal tale the one that has stood the test of time and influenced most others is by the great 12th century Persian poet NIZAMI that is written in over 4000 rhyming couplets that has been translated into many languages and has been told throughout the Middle East and elsewhere in songs, plays, operas and movies. The author of this film-script has used his own translations from his book of this work to form the narrative (by Nizami) and the dialogue and songs of all the participants to make this unique and important work of art, thus bringing to the viewer not only the scope of the story for the eye, emotion and heart but also the beauty, simplicity and profundity of the poetry of the story for the mind, feeling and soul.
LAYLA AND MAJNUN are the children of the leaders of two large and powerful feuding tribes in 7th century Arabia who meet at school and fall helplessly and hopelessly in love… a love that will lead to war between the tribes, immortal songs of love and longing, madness, separation, scandal and disgrace, forced marriage, wanderings in the wilderness, friendship and betrayal, death and destruction of whole families and eventually the union of the two lost, tragic souls in a dramatic and heart-wrenching finale that transcends this material world.
Whether this feature-film be made with actors or with actors then animated via computer (as has recently been successfully done), it is a movie that would gain an audience of all ages in all countries and would create auxiliary products such as books (already written), C.D.’s of the songs, posters, videos, C.D. Rom’s etc.
Paul Smith is a poet, author and translator of over 80 books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, ‘Attar, Sana’i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu’in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre and others, and his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children’s books and screenplays.
On Paul Smith's Trans. of Nizami's Layla & Majnun...It is impossible to underestimate the effect of Nizami’s ‘Layla and Majnun’ on the world over the past 800 years. Many poets throughout this period have copied or been influenced by his story of the young lovers. Many Master-Poets besides Ibn ‘Arabi, ‘Attar, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz and Jami have quoted from him or like him have used the story of the desperate lovers to illustrate how human love can be transformed into divine love through separation and longing. It is said that no one has painted a more perfect picture of women in Persian Literature than Nizami. Paul Smith has kept to the correct rhyme-structure of this long masnavi epic poem, while retaining the beauty of the poetry, the mystical meaning and simplicity of the form. He has included a long Introduction on his life and chapters on all of the works of this great Master/Poet. Bibliography. 215 pages.
